10 Baldur’s Gate 3 Items That Seem Useless, But Actually Have Unique Purposes

With the sheer number of unique items and features in Baldur’s Gate 3, many players will find that they may have not been using something to its fullest potential. One example of this is the Alchemy feature, which many players will only use once or twice for quests. Arrows are also quite underused, and you may often find your inventory being clogged up by items that you’re “saving” for later use.

There are also several items that you may have never picked up or quickly sold, since their purpose isn’t immediately obvious. Lots of common and early-game items are actually a lot more useful than they seem. Whether you’ve always skipped over them when looting or just never used them, here are some items you may not have used before in your Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough.

10 Water

Jugs, Carafes, & Barrels Of Water

Throughout Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most common items players will come across is jugs of water. However, you may not realize that this is actually an extremely useful item to hold onto. Throwing down a jug or barrel of water will cause an area and any creatures within it to receive the “wet” condition – this can be used to cancel out an acidic surface, as well as any burning effects.

A place where this can be very helpful is when saving Mayrina from Auntie Ethel in Act One of BG3. Throwing water onto her cage cancels out the burning effect, which removes the time limit to save her before it collapses. Water surfaces can also become electrified, which is particularly useful for Tempest clerics or other damage dealers focused on electricity damage. Another slightly less useful surface it can turn into is ice when exposed to cold damage, which creates difficult terrain and can cause enemies to become prone.

9 Holy Water

An Easy, Situational Grenade

Though the item is not particularly rare to come across, many players may assume that Holy Water is simply present for flavor, and not be tempted to pick it up when they see it. Holy water has the same properties as regular water, and can be thrown down to be frozen or electrified. It also has a very useful situational perk: Holy Water is classified as a grenade, and will deal 3d6 radiant damage to fiends and undead creatures upon impact.

Holy Water can only be obtained through purchases or looting; it cannot be created from regular water.

This is almost as powerful as a low-level smite spell, and if you happen to find yourself short on movement speed or need to improvise a weapon, then throwing some Holy Water will be a good choice in many situations. The undead are a very common enemy throughout the whole game, but particularly in Act Two. Fiends are less common, but it may be a good idea to stock up on Holy Water before entering the House of Hope in the final act of BG3.

8 Broken Spear Parts

Combining The Two Parts Creates A Solid Early-Game Weapon

If you found one part of a broken spear in Baldur’s Gate 3, it likely didn’t occur to you that you may actually be able to put it back together. There are two parts which can be found in Act One, and combining them will create the Vision Of The Absolutespear. Though it’s only an uncommon weapon, it can be obtained very early on in the game, which makes it a great starter choice to carry you through the first act.

Spear Part

Location

Head of a broken spear

Found on The Owlbear

Shaft of a broken spear

Found on True Soul Edowin's body

When a creature is attacked with this weapon, they will have to pass a dexterity saving throw, or they will become blinded. An interesting bonus which the spear also grants is an extra 2d6 piercing damage to creatures with multiple sets of eyes. This type of creature is very few and far between, but some notable examples are spiders and spectators.

7 Roasted Dwarf Parts

Exclusive Healing Items For The Dark Urge

The roasted dwarf parts cooking over the spit in the Goblin Camp are likely something that you skipped over in your first playthrough - in most circumstances, these are non-consumable items which can only be sold for one gold. However, if you happen to be playing as the Dark Urge Origin, you can eat these disturbing items for 4d4 points of healing. There are three different types of dwarf parts which players can collect from the camp, but they all heal the same amount.

You can also feed the roasted dwarf parts to Crimson in the circus.

Though certainly gruesome, these are actually some of the most convenient healing items in the game. Notably, it does not cost an action to consume one of these items. This means Dark Urge players can receive almost the equivalent of a greater healing potion while not using up the bonus action which would be required to use one.

6 Suspicious Poison

A Powerful Grenade Disguised As A Health Potion

Players may be tempted to abandon the Suspicious Poison upon finding it in the Apothecary’s cellar under the Blighted Village. It visually appears as a healing potion, and the primary option which appears when using it is to drink it, which is likely a deliberate attempt to trick the player. If you are able to see past this deception, then you will be able to use it as a powerful poison grenade.

The effect when thrown is much greater than when the potion is drunk, creating a poison cloud with a one-meter radius. This deals 3d6 poison damage, and creatures within the cloud have to continuously make Constitution saving throws to avoid receiving more stacks of the poison effect. Unlike most poisons, this potion cannot be used as a coating.

5 Haste Spore Flask

A Quick Way To Gain Lots Of Little Buffs

Haste Spores are an effect which most players will only come across in the Myconid Grotto, but you can actually use them in multiple areas of the game if you manage to obtain Haste Spore Flasks. Throwing one of these flasks down creates a 10ft radius where creatures will receive the Haste Spores condition. This is a lot more useful than many will realize, since it provides affected creatures with considerable buffs.

Sovereign Glut and Sovereign Spaw are both compelling Myconid characters in Baldur's Gate 3, and choosing which to support can be difficult.

When affected by Haste Spores, an entity will receive a +2 to Armor Class, doubled movement speed, advantage on Dexterity saving throws, and an additional action. This is particularly useful for characters focused on ranged damage, since most ranged attacks use Dexterity, and throwing down this grenade close to an enemy will also grant them the same buffs. The Armour of the Sporekeeper can also grant the use of Haste Spores, but a flask will be a more convenient option for most players.

4 Terazul

Gain Two Stacks Of Haste Without Using An Action

Terazul is a consumable stimulant which grants the user the Haste effect for two turns. This can be useful if you don't have a potion of speed on hand, but user LorenzoVec also pointed out that it’s great to use alongside one, because it does not require a bonus action to use, and the effects will stack. This is extremely useful in areas where you need to get to places quickly when under a time limit, such as the Iron Throne in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3.

As the post states, the only drawback is the Lethargic debuff once the Haste effect has ended. Despite this, there are a few workarounds for it; the easiest way is to apply the Haste effect again before it runs out. You may find that keeping some Terazul on hand may prove useful after using speed potions instead of always using them together. It's easier to acquire speed potions compared to Terazul, so you may just want to use Terazul at the end of a round with Haste when you don’t want to become Lethargic.

3 Void Bulbs

A Very Useful Item Which Is Much Rarer In The Later Game

Void Bulbs are found throughout the Nautiloid, and are also sold by Omeluum in the Underdark of BG3. Since they appear almost exclusively in the early-game, many players likely did not realize how useful they can be. Throwing this bulb down pulls nearby objects and creatures towards it,which is especially useful for taking out lots of enemies at low health when used alongside other AoE spells.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Should You Kill Or Feed The Newborn Mind Flayer In Act 3?

Among the many decisions and choices in Baldur's Gate 3, one of the strangest has to do with a "newborn" mind flayer and the decision to eat brains.

I find Void Bulbs to be the most effective in the Goblin Camp, where I usually pull a portion of the goblins into a cloud of daggers. They can also be quite useful for dragging enemies off of cliffs and into chasms, making them great to hold onto as a last-resort in Honour Mode. You just need to be careful when using them, since it may not only be your enemies who get sucked into the abyss.

2 Surprise-Based Teddy Bears

The Cutest Grenades

When investigating the suspicious toys in Act Three, it may not occur to players that they can actually take some of the toys for themselves. Three Surprise-Based Teddy Bears can be found in the trapped crate in the Requisitioned Barn, and if you decide to take them, they can be thrown as extremely powerful grenades. Though it does use up an action to throw them, the teddies deal 6d6 damage to a 13ft radius upon impact. The teddy bears are single-use, but could be more favorable than using up a spell slot.

1 Devilfoil Masks

Not Great As A Piece Of Equipment, But Can Be Made Into Something Much Better

You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking Devilfoil Masks are essentially useless. They add a plus-one to Strength, but decrease the wear’s Charisma, Intelligence, and Wisdom by one per every other nearby mask. However, since this isn’t worth the stat decrease for your allies, and can’t raise your Strength above 22, on its own, there are several other pieces of armor which are better choices.

However, if you don't sell these masks and instead take them to Dammon, he can use them to create up to four Orthon Explosives. These explosives can be thrown to deal 3d6 fire damage on impact, and inflict the Infernal Burning condition. This cannot be removed in the same way as normal burning through the use of water, healing potions, or the Help action. The affected entity also cannot heal, so this is definitely an item you’re going to want in the harder modes of Baldur’s Gate 3, where enemies can use healing potions on each other.
